As we begin a new year, let’s take a moment to examine the fact that cybercrime is still facing us every day.
- In 2013, every single Yahoo! email account was hacked. That was more than three billion users.
- In 2014, another half-billion Yahoo! email accounts were hacked again in a separate attack. Digital thieves made off with names, birth dates, phone numbers and passwords of users that were encrypted with security that was easy to crack.
- Yahoo! did not publicly disclose knowledge of these thefts for over three years.
According to the FBI, cybercrime is one of the most pervasive and costliest forms of crime today. To be honest, the numbers, the technology, and the language used to describe these crimes can be mind-numbing.
We discovered a podcast, Breach, that explores these issues in a well-produced manner. It’s easy to listen to and engaging. If you’re interested, take a few minutes to explore the sobering topics they discuss.
