The Roseville Police Department is rolling out a "drone team" or Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Team. This part of the PD's commitment to implementing the most current and useful technologies to achieve their mission and to enhance public safety.
Unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as “drones”, are small rotary aircraft that are controlled remotely from a pilot on the ground. Many UAS aircraft can be outfitted with accessories such as cameras.
The Roseville Police Department has identified several ways that this technology can be beneficial:
- improves search and rescue operations - Locating Missing Persons, Individuals with special needs or disabilities with a faster ability to check remote and hard to access areas of the city. (Bike trails and open spaces)
- accident and crime scene investigations – greatly reducing the number of officers and time spent Investigating a Major Injury Accident. Large accidents require a lot of resources to investigate and the use of UAS reduces the time by being able to map the scene from overhead much quicker and with greater accuracy.
- improving situational awareness – UAS is another option Law Enforcement can use to supplement a helicopter. A UAS can provide great situational awareness through an aerial view of the entire scene, incident, or event.
- crimes in progress - UAS used to follow fleeing suspects, particularly when they are on foot, protects officers and reduces the danger to the public.
