City offices to remain open on Columbus Day

City offices will remain open on Columbus Day this year. Instead of having the day off, employees will receive 8 hours in their holiday bank to use whenever they choose. Most employees already have their holiday bank and may not see a change to their holiday hours.

This change occurred in the current Memorandums of Understanding that are in effect with our bargaining units. The same change is being implemented in the update to terms and conditions for the Management/Confidential group that is going to Council on September 4.

This change offers several benefits to the community and staff. It offers our residents and businesses more time to access city services. It considers school districts’ schedules, which take different days off around the same time in October. It also offers our employees more flexibility in determining when they would like to use this time off.

Note: there are exceptions for those that are on their initial probation in 2019, changed schedules in 2019, work a reduced schedule, etc.

Find your schedule type below to see what to expect:

  • Monday through Friday Employee (your schedule does not vary) - You are considered a Regular employee. At the beginning of the year you were issued eight floating-holiday hours. You will see an additional eight floating-holiday hours added to your holiday bank.
  • Flex Employees (these include 980 flex, 10-hour or flex 40 schedules)
You were issued a holiday bank of 96 hours at the beginning of the year (eight hours per holiday x 11 holidays plus eight floating-holiday hours.) You will not see a change to your hours. Next year, holidays will be calculated by eight hours per holiday x 10 holidays plus 16 floating-holiday hours = 96 hours.
  • Shift Employees (Police, 24-hour, etc.) - You were issued a bank of holiday hours per your MOU and will not see a change to your holiday bank.

Payroll will be adding hours and reviewing employees whose schedules have changed or passed probation in 2019. We expect to have this completed by Friday, September 6.

If you feel your holiday bank is not correct, please contact Payroll.

To take the holiday off, follow your standard procedure for requesting days off with your supervisor.
