On Thursday, September 26, 2019 approximately 100 municipal leaders from South Placer convened on Vernon Street at Randy Peters Event Center for an all-day Leadership Summit. The group consisted of city managers, department heads, and management staff from Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Loomis, Auburn, Colfax, and Placer County.
The meeting had several objectives, however, the main one was to get to know one another. When we’re familiar with people we work with in the region, it’s easier to come together to address issues, innovate, and find solutions. When asked how long attendees in the room had been in their current role around 75 percent of them answered they had been in their role less than five years. That’s significant, considering the amount of agencies that were represented.
A guest speaker attended the morning portion of the workshop to discuss performance improvement, change, and innovation. It was a very interesting discussion. It centered around how we can best create greater capacity in our organizations to do the most good in our communities. The talk centered around unclogging our “pipes” so things flow faster.
The afternoon session included a City Manager Panel discussing the challenges facing our region, opportunities for collaboration, leadership competencies, and general Q&A. The afternoon wrapped up with a table top exercise.
We discussed what “putting capacity into our organizations” looks like practically and what we are/should be doing for succession planning in the region. It was a great day and good start and being a more connected and effective region.
