from City Manager Dominick Casey
As part of an ongoing effort to enhance safety measures at public meetings, a walk-through metal detector will be used for City Council meetings and other designated public meetings starting October 23.
Everyone attending the City Council meeting, including all city staff and Councilmembers, will be required to pass through the metal detector before entering the Council Chambers.
The walk-through metal detector will be similar to those used at a sports arena or the airport. Roseville Police officers and our contract security service have been trained on the use of the metal detector and will be overseeing its use.
Everyone will have to enter the Council Chambers through the dual glass doors on Vernon Street. All other entrances to the area, including from within the Civic Center, will be locked about an hour before the start of the meeting. This could include during regular business hours for Council meetings with an earlier start time due to a closed session or council workshop.
If you are attending a Council meeting, please allow extra time to follow these new procedures especially for meetings at which we expect larger than average attendance.
Keep in mind that weapons of any kind, including firearms, are prohibited in the City Council Chambers.
Prohibited items include, but are not limited to:
- Firearms (even with valid CCW)
- Knives
- Pepper spray/mace,
- Any explosives of any kind (including flares and fireworks)
- Any weapons (improvised or otherwise) and/or dangerous devices of any kind
- Illegal drugs and alcohol
- Any other items deemed unacceptable by the Roseville Police Department.
Civic Center security upgrades
We are also adding security measures on the second floor of the Civic Center, where there currently are none. Like the use of the metal detector, these are not in response to any specific incident or threat but rather proactive safety measures.
A new entrance to the City Manager’s office, City Attorney’s office, and the Hutchinson Conference Room will be built in the upstairs hallway. This new entrance will have limited card-key access. Visitors and guests will be able to request access through a phone at the door.
The City Council office and Human Resources conference room along this hallway will also have limited card-key access.
The Human Resources counter will still accessible by all staff and the public.
If you have any questions or concerns about these security additions, please call or email me.
