Going above and beyond to help
A group of Development Services employees took notice of something that occurred right outside of their office windows and decided to help. Here’s the story as told by Jodie Munson (DS).

Dustin Saving Bird in DS“Several employees in Development Services (DS) noticed a small bird’s nest in a tree right outside of our office at the Civic Center. The tree is located behind the building, and you can easily view the tree from our office windows.

Earlier last week, Brandy LeBeau (Administrative Analyst), Jose Lopez (Sr. Engineer) and Paul Camilleri (Code Enforcement Supervisor) noticed two baby birds that had fallen out of their nest. The two baby birds fell and ended up directly on the ground underneath the tree, and they were not able to fly back up to the nest.

The first morning after the birds appeared on the ground, we noticed that one of the birds passed away. Sadly, we saw his remains and knew he didn’t make it through the night. After this discovery, and seeing only one bird remaining, Brandy knew she had to do something.

Brandy left the office early in the morning for a meeting, and before she left, she called Building Maintenance to request assistance. Shortly after that, Dustin McQueary (Building Maintenance Worker II) arrived in our office. After we briefed him on the situation, he took the ladder outside and positioned it next to the tree.

Very carefully, while using protective gloves, Dustin took hold of the small bird and lifted it back up to its nest. Immediately after being returned to his home in the tree, the baby bird started chirping happily. Seeing this success, it made all of us feel so good, knowing the bird was back in the nest and safe from harm.”

It took only a bit of compassion, a few moments of caring, and the group's decision to help that allowed the little bird to return to the nest.

To that group of employees – thanks. That’s going above and beyond why we’re here.
